Tersus offers a liquid solution of a reduced form of iron, ferrous iron [Fe(II)], for the in-situ reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III), Conceptually, the injected Fe(II) travels through the matrix reacting with oxygen and becomes ferric iron, [Fe(III)], at which point it converts the Cr(VI) to Cr(III). In the +3 oxidation state the chromium is rendered practically insoluble (lower mobility) and nontoxic (lower risk). This iron-based remedy using liquid ferrous salts forms Cr0.25Fe0.75(OH)3 (Palmer and Wittbrodt, 1991). This mineral phase lowers chromium solubility to <0.10 mg/L at pH’s as low as ~4.5 range. We suggest an initial laboratory treatability study to confirm the chromium sequestration.
