iSOC®, which stands for in situ Submerged Oxygen Curtain technology, is a groundwater bioremediation delivery system for introducing supersaturated oxygen or other gaseous substrates into groundwater.
Developed by inVentures Technologies Incorporated, the patented Gas infusion technology contains over 700 hydrophobic microporous hollow fibers that supersaturate the groundwater with low decay DO. Made of stainless steel (1.62 inches/ 41mm in diameter and 12.5 inches/ 318 mm in length) the iSOC® probe is placed in a series of monitoring or treatment wells to create a curtain of high concentration dissolved gas.
The iSOC® unit transfers gases directly to groundwater in a treatment well without sparging. Each unit is connected to a source of pressurized oxygen or other substrate gases with polyurethane tubing and gas delivery is managed with a control panel that includes a gas flow meter and pressure gauges. The top of the iSOC® unit is equipped with a barbed fitting to accommodate 0.17” or 4 mm ID inch diameter polyurethane tubing and a filter system that accommodates the corresponding tubing OD of either 0.25’ or 6 mm. A lifting eye is also installed on the top of the unit for attaching a lifting/security wire for placement in the well.
iSOC® is a low cost technology for supersaturating the ground water to enhance natural attenuation. The technology supersaturates the ground water with low decay D.O. At concentrations ranging from 40 to 200 ppm depending on aquifer conditions and depth of injection. The technology has no moving parts and does not require electricity. The technology can be easily moved to a new injection point or new site.
The iSOC® can achieve a radius of influence of 15 to 20 feet (4.6 – 6.1 m) or greater around a treatment well. The unit is typically installed up gradient of the source or monitoring well. Although the technology is primarily dependent on ground water velocity and the oxygen demands of the aquifer, molecular dispersion will also play a key role in tight soils.
The unit will work in a 2-inch (51mm) monitoring well or larger and the oxygen transfer efficiency is nearly a 100%. Polyurethane tubing is used to connect the iSOC® unit to the filter and oxygen canister. The internal flow controller on the iSOC® is set at 16 cc/min and will automatically compensate for various depths of water. One iSOC® unit will use 1 cubic feet (28 liters) of oxygen per day. A typical 40 cubic foot cylinder will last approximately 40 days.
The iSOC® technology is installed at hundreds of petroleum and chlorinated solvent sites in the USA, Canada, Europe and Asia. The technology can be used as a primary remediation strategy, for polishing or for control of off-site migration.
