Product Overview

EDS-Activator™ is a proprietary remediation catalyst designed for in-situ use with vegetable-oil substrates. It promotes the cleavage of fatty acids from triglycerides, increasing substrate bioavailability and accelerating reductive biodegradation processes that support anaerobic remediation of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs).

EDS-Activator™ is a core component of the EDS-Advanced™ Catalyzed Reductive Bioremediation platform and is used in combination with emulsified oil substrates and alcohol cosolvents to enhance amendment performance, control biofouling, and improve amendment distribution during injection operations.

Technical Basis

Catalyzed Fatty Acid Release and Bioavailability

EDS-Activator™ catalyzes the breakdown of triglycerides into free fatty acids, increasing the rate and extent of fermentation under anaerobic conditions. The resulting fatty acids serve as precursors for hydrogen generation, which is required by organohalide-respiring bacteria to drive complete reductive dechlorination of CVOCs.

This catalytic mechanism improves substrate utilization efficiency compared to non-activated oil injections and supports more rapid establishment of reducing conditions conducive to treatment.

Reaction Mechanisms and Byproducts

The catalytic reactions facilitated by EDS-Activator™ result in well-understood biodegradation pathways. Reaction byproducts include hydrogen, ethene, ethane, chloride, carbon dioxide, and minor volatile fatty acids—compounds commonly associated with anaerobic biodegradation and natural attenuation processes.

No hazardous or persistent degradation byproducts have been identified.

Applications

EDS-Activator™ is used as part of a catalyzed reductive bioremediation strategy for chlorinated solvent impacts.

Typical applications include:

  • Source-area and downgradient treatment of CVOCs
  • Enhancement of emulsified oil substrate performance
  • Acceleration of reductive dechlorination to ethene
  • Support of sustained anaerobic conditions in treatment zones

The product is not a biological amendment and does not introduce microorganisms or pathogens.

Integration with Tersus Technologies

EDS-Activator™ functions as the catalytic component within EDS-Advanced™, Tersus’ patented catalyzed reductive bioremediation platform (U.S. Patent No. 11,577,231 B2).

Within the EDS-Advanced™ system, remediation is achieved through the coordinated injection of:

  • Emulsified vegetable-oil substrates (e.g., EDS-ER™)
  • Alcohol-based cosolvents (e.g., EDS-Substrate Shuttle™)
  • Catalyst (EDS-Activator™)

EDS-Activator™ promotes fatty acid release from injected oils, enhances fermentation and hydrogen production, and supports efficient electron donor availability for organohalide-respiring bacteria. When applied as part of an integrated EDS-Advanced™ injection program, the catalyst improves amendment utilization, reduces biofouling risks, and supports consistent treatment performance.
