Sulfate-Enhanced Anaerobic Bioremediation


Native sulfate-reducing microorganisms use sulfate as an electron acceptor to biodegrade petroleum hydrocarbons under oxygen-limited conditions.

How Does it Work?

Enhanced anaerobic oxidative bioremediation helps naturally occurring microorganisms break down contaminants in groundwater where there is little or no oxygen. Instead of using oxygen, this process provides other substances, such as sulfate or nitrate, that microorganisms can use to break down contaminants.

As microorganisms use these alternative electron acceptors, they break down organic contaminants and convert them into simpler, less harmful substances such as carbon dioxide, water, and other naturally occurring byproducts.
