NutriBind®
NutriBind® and NutriBind® HDPAC combine high-surface-area powdered activated carbon with biological amendments to provide rapid contaminant sequestration while supporting long-term aerobic or anaerobic biodegradation.
What Is In Situ Sorption & Biodegradation (ISB)?
In Situ Sorption & Biodegradation (ISB) combines contaminant sequestration with enhanced biological degradation to provide both immediate and long-term remediation benefits. The technology uses high-surface-area sorptive media, typically powdered activated carbon (PAC), to rapidly adsorb dissolved contaminants and reduce plume migration while creating a favorable habitat for microbial growth.
Unlike conventional sorption technologies that simply immobilize contaminants, ISB incorporates biological amendments that stimulate microorganisms capable of degrading the sorbed contaminants over time. This integrated approach transforms activated carbon from a passive adsorbent into an active treatment zone where contaminants are continuously destroyed rather than merely stored.
Depending on project objectives, ISB can be implemented using aerobic or anaerobic biodegradation. Aerobic formulations supply oxygen-releasing amendments to promote oxidation of petroleum hydrocarbons, while anaerobic formulations provide sulfate or other alternative electron acceptors to support long-term anaerobic biodegradation under oxygen-limited conditions.

Enhanced Aerobic Bioremediation
Stimulating aerobic microorganisms to rapidly degrade petroleum hydrocarbons.
Enhanced aerobic bioremediation supplies oxygen and essential nutrients to promote the growth of naturally occurring microorganisms that break down petroleum hydrocarbons into carbon dioxide, water, and biomass. It is commonly used to treat dissolved plumes and residual contamination from gasoline, diesel, and other fuel releases.
Enhanced Anaerobic Oxidative Bioremediation
Stimulating anaerobic microorganisms to oxidize petroleum hydrocarbons using alternative electron acceptors.
Enhanced anaerobic oxidative bioremediation promotes the biological degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons in oxygen-limited environments by supplying alternative electron acceptors such as sulfate or nitrate. This approach is well suited for treating dissolved hydrocarbon plumes where aerobic conditions cannot be sustained.
