EDS-ME™
Multi-Alcohol Electron Donor – Rapid Release
Safety Data Sheet (SDS)
Product Overview
EDS-ME™ is a rapid-release electron donor formulated as a blend of ethanol, methanol, and n-propyl alcohol. It is designed for in-situ remediation applications where immediate electron donor availability and enhanced dispersibility are required.
When injected prior to extended-release substrates such as EDS-ER™, EDS-ME™ provides an initial pulse of readily fermentable carbon that supports rapid establishment of anaerobic conditions and improves early-time amendment distribution in aquifers and subsurface environments.
Technical Basis
Rapid-Release Electron Donor Performance
Low-molecular-weight alcohols such as ethanol and methanol are highly soluble, readily biodegradable, and rapidly fermented under anaerobic conditions. Fermentation of EDS-ME™ generates hydrogen and short-chain organic acids that serve as electron donors for anaerobic microbial processes, including reductive dechlorination of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs).
Because these alcohols are consumed quickly relative to long-chain lipid substrates, EDS-ME™ is well suited for applications requiring immediate reducing conditions ahead of slower-fermenting amendments.
Enhanced Dispersibility in the Subsurface
Due to complete miscibility with water, EDS-ME™ disperses efficiently within the aquifer matrix and pore spaces. This behavior provides advantages in heterogeneous formations and tight intervals where emulsified oils may exhibit limited early-time distribution.
Applications
EDS-ME™ is used as a short-term, rapid-response electron donor in anaerobic remediation programs.
Typical applications include:
- Pre-conditioning aquifers prior to injection of extended-release substrates
- Rapid establishment of anaerobic conditions
- Enhancement of early-time reductive dechlorination activity
-
Support of amendment distribution in low-permeability or heterogeneous formations
EDS-ME™ is not intended to replace long-term substrates but to complement them within an integrated treatment strategy.
Integration with Tersus Technologies
EDS-ME™ functions as a rapid-release electron donor within the EDS-Advanced™ catalyzed reductive bioremediation platform (U.S. Patent No. 11,577,231 B2).
Within the EDS-Advanced™ system, remediation may involve coordinated use of:
- EDS-ME™ for immediate electron donor availability and enhanced dispersibility
- EDS-ER™ as the extended-release emulsified oil substrate
- EDS-Substrate Shuttle™ as the alcohol cosolvent and conditioning agent
- EDS-Activator™ as the proprietary catalyst promoting fatty acid release
When injected ahead of or alongside EDS-ER™, EDS-ME™ supports rapid onset of reducing conditions, improves early amendment contact, and helps establish favorable geochemical conditions for sustained treatment.
