EDS-QR™

Electron Donor Solution – Quick Release
   Safety Data Sheet (SDS)

Product Overview

EDS-QR™ (Electron Donor Solution – Quick Release) is a high-purity (≥99.7%) refined glycerin product developed by Tersus Environmental for in-situ groundwater and soil bioremediation. It functions as a rapid-release, soluble carbon source that stimulates anaerobic microbial activity and supports enhanced reductive bioremediation of chlorinated solvents and other anaerobically degradable contaminants.

EDS-QR™ is particularly well suited for fast-track remediation projects and for applications requiring immediate establishment of reducing conditions. It is commonly used alone for short-duration treatment or in combination with extended-release electron donors to balance immediate and long-term treatment objectives.

Technical Basis

Rapid-Release Fermentable Carbon

EDS-QR™ consists of refined glycerin with a minimum purity of 99.7 percent. Glycerin is a low-molecular-weight, readily fermentable substrate that is rapidly biodegraded under anaerobic conditions. Upon injection, EDS-QR™ is converted to fatty acids and hydrogen, which serve as electron donors for anaerobic microbial processes, including reductive dechlorination.

Because of its high fermentable carbon content, EDS-QR™ delivers a greater electron equivalence per unit mass than many conventional soluble substrates, allowing lower overall injection volumes while achieving effective treatment.

Fast-Acting Treatment Window

A single application of EDS-QR™ typically supports elevated biological activity for two to three months, making it an effective solution for rapid response actions, interim remedies, or projects with aggressive cleanup schedules.

Applications

EDS-QR™ is used as a quick-release electron donor in anaerobic remediation programs.

Typical applications include:

  • Enhanced reductive dechlorination of chlorinated ethenes (PCE, TCE, DCE, VC)
  • Treatment of chlorinated ethanes and other anaerobically degradable compounds
  • Reduction of nitrates and select oxidized metals
  • Bioremediation of explosives and energetic compounds
  • Pre-conditioning aquifers prior to long-term substrate injection

EDS-QR™ is compatible with bioaugmentation cultures (e.g., Dehalococcoides-containing consortia) and may be injected via wells, direct-push methods, or recirculation systems.

Integration with Tersus Technologies

EDS-QR™ is frequently used as a rapid-acting component within EDS-Advanced™, Tersus’ catalyzed reductive bioremediation platform.

Within an integrated treatment strategy, EDS-QR™ may be combined with:

  • EDS-ER™ to provide long-term, extended-release electron donor capacity
  • EDS-Activator™ to enhance fatty acid release and fermentation efficiency
  • EDS-Substrate Shuttle™ to improve amendment distribution and injection performance

When used alongside slower-fermenting substrates, EDS-QR™ provides immediate reducing conditions and early-time microbial stimulation, while extended-release products sustain treatment over longer timeframes.

Features & Benefits

Features

  • ≥99.7% refined glycerin
  • High fermentable carbon content
  • Sodium-free formulation
  • Completely miscible with water
  • Rapidly biodegradable
  • Food-grade raw material

Benefits

  • Rapid establishment of anaerobic conditions
  • High electron equivalence per pound of material
  • Effective for fast-track and interim remedies
  • Compatible with bioaugmentation cultures
  • Suitable for salt-sensitive aquifers
  • Supports balanced short- and long-term treatment strategies

Typical Application

EDS-QR™ is delivered as a ready-to-use concentrate that can be diluted with water in the field. The diluted solution has a viscosity near that of water, allowing efficient subsurface distribution. Injection configurations may include grid patterns, barrier applications, or targeted source-area treatment using wells or direct-push points.
